Other knife boards just don't measure up to this large, 17-by-8-inch hardwood knife board and slicer. The wood for this set is red alder left over from an Oregon furniture shop. Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest used red alder bark to treat rashes and insect bites, and Lewis and Clark carved their names in a red alder to mark their arrival at Cape Disappointment overlooking the mouth of the Columbia River. The tree was considered a nuisance for many decades but now is highly valued as a fast-growing, sustainable hardwood. The slicer stores neatly in the board and has a serrated stainless steel blade that will never dull. The perfect combination for slicing baguettes, bagels and home-baked bread.
