Questions & Answers

Ask a Question

Question:

Why do these not have lids? I know dust would be a problem for sure at my house--? Otherwise, the cellars seem wonderful, & the price is great, too.

Answer:

Open salt cellars have a long history and tradition. Some have lids, and others – also called open salts and salt dishes – don’t. These types of salt cellars were used by wealthy families from the Middle Ages until World War II. The bowl, along with a miniature salt spoon, was passed to guests by the head of the household for individual service. This tradition inspired Bambeco’s retro designed Salt and Pepper Cellars. See the Bolo Sugar Spoon for an accompaniment to these cellars: http://www.bambeco.com/Serveware/Yamazaki-Bolo-Sugar-Spoon.asp. As far as the dust is concerned, you could store them in a cabinet where dust would not be an issue. If that is not possible, we would suggest storing the salt and pepper in different containers, and filling the cellars only when you will be using them. As functional Salt and Pepper cellars as well as wonderful pieces of décor, these handmade cellars will spice up any table!
